Resumo:The Search for better thermal efficient buildings to comply with the demands of the modern market, some minerals and materials can be used with those traditionally employed in its construction. Among them there is the diatomite, a mineral generated by the deposit of silica on diatomaceous algae fossils, that due its physicochemical structure can modify the thermal properties of the matrix to which it is incorporated. To investigate if its application on cement mortars can yield a satisfactory performance, cement mortars of 10cm height and 5cm diameter, with a 1:4 cement:sand (reference trace) volume ratio, without diatomite (0%), and samples, in which the volume of sand was replaced by diatomite by the ratios of 25%, 50%, 75% e 100%. The thermal properties of each trace were measured using the device KD2 Pro, by 2 minutes three times with intervals of 10 minutes between them, and the thermal conductivity values were evaluated. The incorporation of diatomite into the cement mortar provoked a reduction in its conductivity that was proportional to the diatomite’s percentage inserted, while the reference sample produced only with cement and sand showed a thermal conductivity of (0,542±0,001)W/m.K when the sand was fully replaced by the diatomite, it was possible to achieve values as low as (0,126±0,001)W/m.K.
