Resumo:Field guides are tools with the function of disseminating and managing biodiversity data. In this study, we present the process of developing a photographic guide developed with the objective of supporting the assessment of consumption of biodiverse foods in studies of food consumption. The guide compiles data from exploratory qualitative research, with the purpose of systematizing data from plants of food biodiversity in the context of the Caatinga. The elaboration of the guide was based on the “Guidelines for the Assessment of Biodiverse Foods in Dietary Surveys” of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. The current version of the guide, already tested in the fieldwork, is ready to support the development of food consumption research in the context of the Caatinga. We do know, so far, that this is the first tool developed in Brazil to support the development of dietary surveys that consider food biodiversity. We believe that this guide can help us to assess the contribution of food biodiversity to the promotion of food and nutritional security.
