Resumo:This work deals with issues regarding scholarly communication, technological advances that contribute structurally to the new productive dynamics, and the practices of knowledge dissemination. It highlights open science as a model for new academic-scientific conduct, as it expands the development of research tools, sharing knowledge. In opposition, it points to the publication embargo as an agent that restricts free availability knowledge. In this way, it aims to point out on behalf of Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte undergraduates, motivations for research embargo at the Digital Library of Monographs (BDM) at the time of submission when still graduating from the institution. As for the methodological approach, it begins with a bibliographic and exploratory research with a qualitative and quantitative method. Semi-structured electronic questionnaires were applied. Data collected was analyzed by means of statistical-descriptive analysis as well as content analysis. The analysis suggest that perceptions about open science are below expectations and do not reach the majority of students. They demonstrate, for the most part, agreement with open practices, but paradoxically they perform embargo practices for their research. Other results indicate that 48% of the respondents were unaware of the possibility of a publication embargo, 67% considered the deposit at BDM to be relevant and 81% saw open access as a way to achieve greater impact of the publication. As for the reasons related to the embargo, at least 7 (seven) intentions were pointed out: subsequent publication (38%); teacher guidance (29%); experience and / or curiosity (9%); study exposure (9%); individual desire and / or intellectual property (5%); dissatisfaction with work (5%); ignorance of the embargo (5%). Therefore, it can be inferred that publishing works later and preserving contents aiming at the novelty is the main justification of the students.
