Resumo:Information is seen as a transforming phenomenon of social reality, especially of peripheral communities and marginalized contexts, usually deprived of inclusive and democratic public policies. Thus, this qualitative study based on exploratory and bibliographical research turns to the problematization of social movements and the democratization of information, in dialogue with Library Science and Information Science, reinforcing them as Social and Human Sciences. It elucidates the importance of the social responsibility of the librarian as mediator, going beyond the technical and mechanical activities that predominate in the professional's doing. The general objective, then, is to discuss initiatives to democratize information and encourage reading and culture, to use urban movements as mediators and protagonists for a collective and social good. It is advocated in favor of social bias, seeking to understand the contexts, symbologies, languages, subjectivities that characterize the identity of groups, as well as information as a human and social element capable of (in) forming more critical individuals. Emphasis is given to the actions of social initiatives inserted in the local reality, presenting, “Levante Popular da Juventude” and “Batalha do vinho”, understanding their relevance, dialoguing about these initiatives that seek to overcome social and economic obstacles by propagating information in an alternative way with the incentive to reading and culture from collective articulations for the benefit of the community.
