description The present work presents usability as an attribute related to quality and ease of use, mainly aimed at the digital environment. Usability studies have pointed out that some groups of people, such as the elderly, have difficulties in using digital technologies. Through this, the work presents usability as a tool that helps to facilitate the use of information in digital informational environments, bringing advances and benefits that can improve the process of independence and autonomy of the elderly. Its general objective is to evaluate the website of the Rio Grande do Norte Social Security Institute (IPERN) based on specific usability recommendations for the elderly. The methodological path began with a bibliographic search to retrieve informational materials on the area of usability in digital informational environments and on human aging. Then, a systematic observation of the IPERN website was carried out, through heuristic evaluation, applying the usability recommendations specific to the elderly public. The results of the analysis revealed that it does not fully comply with the principles and recommendations for digital environments that target the elderly, presenting some usability problems, such as: overload of layout information, links with labels directed to different pages, use of pull-down menus, subtitles not automatically presented, links grouped in a non-significant way, among others. Due to the usability problems identified, these were classified into barriers, obstacles and noise, and suggestions for improvements were also presented for each problem. It concludes that the usability recommendations specific to the elderly public facilitate access to the information available and assist in the development of solutions to the identified problems.

O presente trabalho apresenta a usabilidade como um atributo relacionado a qualidade e a facilidade de uso, principalmente voltado para o ambiente digital. Estudos sobre usabilidade tem apontado que alguns grupos de pessoas, como idosos, apresentam dificuldades na utilização de tecnologias digitais. Por meio disso, o trabalho apresenta a usabilidade como ferramenta que auxilia a facilitar o uso da informação em ambientes informacionais digitais, trazendo avanços e benefícios que podem melhorar o processo de independência e autonomia dos idosos. Tem como objetivo geral avaliar o web site do Instituto de Previdência do Rio Grande do Norte (IPERN) com base em recomendações de usabilidade específicas para o público idoso. O percurso metodológico teve início com a realização de uma pesquisa bibliográfica para recuperar materiais informacionais sobre a área da usabilidade em ambientes informacionais digitais e sobre envelhecimento humano. Em seguida, foi realizada uma observação sistemática do web site do IPERN, por meio de avaliação heurística, aplicando as recomendações de usabilidade específicas para o público idoso. Os resultados da análise revelaram que ele não atende em plenitude os princípios e as recomendações para os ambientes digitais que têm como público alvo os idosos, apresentado alguns problemas de usabilidade, como: sobrecarga de informações do leiaute, links com rótulos direcionados para páginas diferentes, utilização de menus pull-down, legendas não apresentadas automaticamente, links agrupados de forma não significativa entre outros. Mediante aos problemas de usabilidade identificados, estes foram classificados em barreiras, obstáculos e ruídos, sendo também apresentadas sugestões de melhorias para cada problema.
