Resumo:The sport is part of human culture, spreading from the school to the spectacle sport. The adherence, persistence and abandonment of sports practice by young people are justified by motivational elements linked to a series of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Indirectly, not only the Olympic representation of a nation depends on the massification of sport, but also, in view of the increasing number of cases of sedentary lifestyle, the quality of life of adults. Understanding the reasons that lead children and adolescents to play sports is an increasingly emerging need. In this sense, the objective of the present study was to identify the reasons that lead school athletes to practice athletics. Therefore, a sample composed of 50 athletes of both sexes, with a mean age of 15.68 (standard deviation = 1.39), participating in a national competition, was used. The subjects were evaluated regarding the motivational attributes that drive them to practice sports through the Participation Motivation Questionnaire by Guedes and Netto (2013). The results showed that competition and technical competence are the dimensions that most motivate school athletes, while social recognition and emotion are the least motivating. The findings point to a need for revision of motivational ideas based on success in technical and competitive requirements. The scientific literature lacks longitudinal studies that address this theme.
