Resumo:The National Policy on Health Promotion (2006), seeks to put into practice the principles of SUS and has as one of its goals the expansion of autonomy and responsibility of individuals and society through health education. From the perspective of making the individual capable of propagating healthy habits highlights the role of parents in the oral health care of their children. So the targeted educational strategies, in particular, mothers and pregnant women are constituted as fundamental to the empowerment of these clients. The child in infancy and childhood has certain morphological features that the layman's eyes are classified as diseases and malformations, however, are characterized as a natural condition and transient, typical of its development, is fundamental to socialize this knowledge. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to identify the knowledge and practices Mother's Planalto neighborhood, on oral health in infancy and childhood. METHODS: This is a qualitative research aimed at 10 women, mothers of children under seven years old, indexed the Basic Unit of the Presidential Health. The sample was intentional, where women were invited to participate in the study spontaneously. Interviews were conducted using a semistructured script, all of which were recorded. After a meticulous reading of the material, they identified the senses nucleus and continued with the construction of categories that were analyzed based on the content analysis technique proposed by Minayo. RESULTS: The results show that the mothers' knowledge about oral health in infancy and childhood is limited, causing surprise to the researcher as they are all accompanied by the Family Health Strategy. CONCLUSIONS: It is necessary to analyze the actions and educational strategies adopted by the oral health team of ESF, in order to identify the limits and difficulties aiming for a redirection of such actions so that mothers and pregnant women can develop their autonomy when it comes to your health oral and their children.
