Resumo:Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that affects the dental support tissues and can impact directly in the quality of life of the individual. Several tools for assessing the impact of oral health have emerged to determine which activities are most affected by periodontal disease self-reported by the patients. This research aims to evaluate the impact of moderate or severe periodontitis on the quality of life (QOL) of adults on the psychological, physical, and social aspects through the Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) and Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaires, and to compare them. The questionnaires were answered by 17 patients and completed by a single applicator. Both questionnaires showed negative impact of periodontitis on QOL. For OHRQoL it was found predominance in appearance (2.06), smile (2.29), unconcern (2.29), comfort (2.53) and satisfaction with eating (2.53); For OHIP-14 it was found eating discomfort (1.39), feeling ashamed (1.01), stressed (0.87) and uncomfortable (0.82). The OHRQoL social and psychological domains were most affected, as were the physical and psychological domains of OHIP-14. Statistically significant differences were found between clinical attachment level (CAL), probing depth (PD), percentage of diseased sites ≥5mm and OHRQoL (p<0,05), as well as between presence and amount of tooth loss, gingival bleeding index ( ), and OHIP. - 14 (p<0,05). Both instruments were important in clarifying the negative impact on the quality of life due to periodontitis; in contrast, OHRQoL seems to be the most pragmatic choice. Further studies with larger sampling and follow-up time are still needed.
