Resumo:This study aims to investigate the prevalence of TMD in elderly residents in the community, as well as the factors associated with this complaint to oral health. This is a cross-sectional and observational study. The sample consisted of 209 elderly individuals, representative of the municipality of Macaíba / RN. The instruments of data collection were the simplified questionnaire for the screening of patients with temporomandibular dysfunction (QST / TMD), which is a validated instrument with five questions and a form that included socioeconomic-demographic variables, access to dental services, Oral and general health conditions and functional capacity. The data were analyzed using the Pearson's chi-square test or the Fisher's exact test with a significance level of 5%. As a measure of strength of association, the prevalence ratio was calculated with a 95% confidence interval. The sample consisted of predominantly female individuals and a mean of 75.19 (± 8.14) years of age. The prevalence of TMD was 25% (19-31) in the surveyed elderly. The analysis of the results showed that there was a significant association between TMD and marital status (p = 0.012), caregiver ownership (p <0.001), need for lower arch prosthesis (p = 0.005) and functional capacity (p <0.001). It is concluded that the prevalence of TMD in the elderly in the community was considered low and may be related to marital status, caregiver possession, functional capacity and need for prosthesis in the lower arch.
