This study aimed to analyze the knowledge of oral health of elementary school teachers
of Canguaretama-RN city, as well as the importance given by these to the subject. To
this end, a questionnaire with open and closed questions about oral health, applied
among 70 teachers from 11 schools of the city was used. To evaluate the level of
knowledge of the participants, it was considered the following scores: 0-50% correct of
the questions proposals as unsatisfactory knowledge; 51-70% as a reasonable
knowledge and above 70% as satisfactory knowledge. Of those surveyed, 91.4%
consider that the teacher shares with his family and the surgeon dentist the responsibility
to guide students about oral hygiene and 95.7% reported performing activities to
education and promotion of oral health. As regards the definition and removal of plaque
37.1% believe that the plate is a yellow mass on the tooth surface, while 61.4% consider
that the scraping is the most appropriate procedure for its removal. Regarding the
fluoride, 84.1% answered correctly its function. When asked about matters relating to the
prevention, 51.7% believe that dental cavities is prevented by just brushing, while 87.1%
of participants knew the characteristics of the brush suitable for children. According to the
criteria adopted for the evaluation, we concluded that teachers have a reasonable
knowledge of oral health, with some limitations, signaling the need for training activities
for these professionals so that they have a deeper understanding in theme and in fact
can be multipliers of information on health. |

O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar o grau de conhecimento em saúde bucal dos professores de ensino fundamental do município de Canguaretama-RN, assim como a importância dada por esses ao tema. Para tanto, foi utilizado um questionário com questões abertas e fechadas sobre prevenção e promoção à saúde bucal, aplicado entre 70 professores de 11 escolas do Município. Para avaliar o nível de conhecimento dos participantes da pesquisa, considerou-se o seguinte escore: de 0 a 50% de acerto das questões propostas como conhecimento insatisfatório; 51 a 70%, como conhecimento razoável e acima de 70%, como conhecimento satisfatório. Daqueles que aceitaram participar da pesquisa, 91,4% consideram que o professor divide com a família e o cirurgião dentista a responsabilidade de orientar os alunos sobre higiene oral e 95,7% afirmaram realizar atividades para educação e promoção da saúde bucal. No que se refere à definição e remoção da placa bacteriana 37,1% acreditam que a placa é uma massa amarela sobre a superfície dentária, enquanto que 61,4% consideram que a raspagem é o procedimento mais adequado para sua remoção. Em relação ao do flúor, 84,1% responderam corretamente a sua função. Quando questionados sobre assuntos ligados a prevenção, 51,7% acreditam que a cárie dentária é prevenida através apenas da escovação, enquanto que 87,1% dos participantes sabiam as características da escova adequada para crianças.
