Resumo:INTRODUCTION: Among the workers of health, there is great tension brought about by exposure to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Despite the adoption of biosafety measures and the low risk of exposure to HIV, many of these professionals have refused to treat people carrying the virus. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the perception / knowledge of students in the undergraduate course in Dentistry of UFRN regarding the influence of social stigma on biosafety measures applied in the management of HIV. METHODOLOGY: This is study a cross-sectional, descriptive, observational and mixed study, characterized by incorporating elements of qualitative and quantitative origin, with a predominance of qualitative aspects, conducted at the Department of Dentistry of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) with the final students. Data collection was performed through a questionnaire containing 8 questions and interview composed of 5 semi-structured questions. The data are based on categorization of responses and Collective Subject Discourse (DSC). RESULTS: The results show that students are prepared with technical knowledge and aware of the importance of biosafety measures, however, 50% of students agree that there is a need to reinforce biosafety measures in the care of HIV patients.CONCLUSIONS: The graduating students of UFRN's Dentistry course have shown a positive perception regarding the importance of ethical conduct in dental care and a satisfactory knowledge about the protection measures and risks of biological contamination that are submitted. However, students still show fear of contamination and, therefore, seek to reinforce biosafety measures and attention during care.
