Resumo:Introduction:Violence against women is currently one of the main causes of female mortality, making it a worldwide public health problem. Objective: To analyze the perception of violence against women and the assistance provided to victims. Methodology: This is a qualitative descriptive and exploratory study, developed in a Basic Health Unit, located in Natal, RN. Nine users of the health service and one nurse from the Basic Health Unit were part of the sample. Data collection with users and nurse occurred in November 2019, through semi-structured interviews. Results: The interviews were conducted, transcribed and read comprehensively, resulting in four categories: Understanding about gender violence; Experience of gender violence; Search for support and nursing in assisting victims. Discussion: It is perceived the lack of knowledge of women regarding the theme, relating violence only to physical, moral and sexual aggression. For the macho culture present in a still patriarchal society, still for the stigma instituted to the victims originated from the society. Parallel to this, there is the little preparation of the nursing professional in providing assistance to victims. Conclusion: From the research in question, it was evidenced the deficient knowledge about gender violence and the assistance provided to the victims by the users and the nursing professional of the health service in Primary Care.
