Resumo:Introduction: The cup technique is an alternative for the baby to receive breast milk if there is no effective breastfeeding. The objective of this study was to verify the profile of newborns and mothers who used the coping technique to feed the neonate in a maternity hospital in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte. Methodology: This is a descriptive and exploratory study of a quantitative approach performed with 132 binomials, mother-child. The variables, age, educational level, occupation, parity, types of deliveries and pregnancies, number of prenatal consultations, pathological history and gestational age, birth weight and APGAR in the 1st and 5th minutes of life were analyzed. Results and discussion: The majority of puerperal women were 20 years of age or older and had completed secondary or higher education, were primiparous, route of birth was by caesarean sectionand single pregnancy, with a level of education equal to or higher than the prenatal consultations greater than 6 visits, without pathological antecedents and with gestational age between 37 and 41 days without and 6 days. Most of the neonates had adequate weight (> 2.5kg - 4kg) and presented APGAR 9 at the 1st and 5th minute of life. Conclusion In view of the above, it was possible to conclude that the factors inherent to the introduction of the complement, using the cupping technique, in the postpartum period in the hospital environment were mostly for the binomial whose newborns were born by cesarean delivery.
