The search for alternative medicines of natural origin is growing, mainly due to the inefficiency of the drugs currently used for the treatment of diseases caused by super-bacteria and/or oxidative stresses. The barks of plants, on the other hand, present themselves as a source of bioactive capable of treating different diseases. Among the chemical compounds of the barks with medicinal properties, tannins stand out. Thus, this work aimed to characterize and verify the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of the tannin-based extract of the stem bark of Azadirachta indica A Juss. The bark was collected from five individuals located in the experimental plantation of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Macaíba Campus. They were dried and ground to reduce their granulometry. Then the phenolic compounds were extracted and the total solid content (TST), Stiasny index (I), condensed tannin content (CTT), non-tannin content (NTC), and tannins per ton of dry bark were determined. Antioxidant activity was determined by the DPPH method. For antimicrobial activity, the disk diffusion method was applied using gram-positive and negative bacteria. The mean value found for TST, I, TTC was 6.91, 67.4, and 6.88%, respectively. The antioxidant activity showed an IC50 value of 4.69 µg/mL-1. The most sensitive bacteria to the use of tannic extract was Staphylococcus aureus, with an average halo of inhibition of 12.4 mm. Therefore, the tannic extract of A. indica presents itself as a source of bioactive with therapeutic capacity and can serve as a basis for the development of different products in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. |

A busca por medicamentos alternativos de origem natural é crescente, em virtude, principalmente, da ineficiência dos fármacos utilizados atualmente para o tratamento de doenças causadas por superbactérias e/ou estresses oxidativos. As cascas das plantas, por sua vez, se apresentam como fonte de bioativos capazes de tratar diferentes enfermidades. Dentre os compostos químicos das cascas com propriedades medicinais se destacam os taninos. Desse modo, este trabalho teve por objetivo caracterizar e verificar o potencial antioxidante e antimicrobiano do extrato a base de taninos da casca do caule do Nim. As cascas foram coletadas de cinco indivíduos da espécie localizados em plantio experimental da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, no Campus Macaíba. Estas foram secas e moídas para redução de sua granulometria. Em seguida foram realizadas a extração dos compostos fenólicos e determinados o teor de sólidos totais (TST), índice de Stiasny (I), teor de taninos condensados (TTC), teor de não taninos (TNT) e taninos por toneladas de casca seca (TTS). A atividade antioxidante foi determinada por varredura do radical 2,2-difenil-1-picril-hidrazila (DPPH). Para atividade antimicrobiana foi aplicado o método de difusão em disco utilizando bactérias gram-positivas e negativas. O valor médio encontrado para TST, I e TTC foram, respectivamente, 6,91, 67,4 e 6,88%. A atividade antioxidante apresentou valor de IC50 de 4,69 µg/mL-1. A bactéria mais sensível ao uso do extrato foi Staphylococcus aureus, com halo de inibição médio de 12,4 mm.
