Resumo: | This paper consists of an analysis of the concept of ugliness in visual arts, focusing on the
ugly surrounding the images of witches on Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes’ paintings
and series Los Caprichos – published in 1799. The idea around the witches and the
demonic is due to the Catholic Church, spread in the imaginary of the time for greater
control of people (ECO, 2007, p. 185). Many artists have portrayed witches throughout the
history of art, as well as their sabbaths, their relationships with the occult and the devil,
however, the visual proposal will be to show that the notion of ugliness goes beyond
aesthetic concepts, but is also attached to the notions of morality of the individual who
defines it, as well as its religion, culture and epoch. References are sought in Eco,
Rosenkranz, among others. |
