Resumo:This work presents a theoretical reflection in the field of the history of the arts, having as research object the life and work of the artist José Daniel Filho, known as Zé de China. The objective is to investigate the artist's creation process, covering the technical, iconographic and poetic contexts present in his work, and to establish a biography of the artist. Its creation process, characterized by the production of moving sculptures, structured in windmills, stands out as an object of research for transiting in the tenuous limits of concepts such as popular art, kinetic art and contemporary art. The research is the result of immersion in the Scientific Initiation, within the Vernacular Project of UFRN, and the interest in exploring the historical and the contemporary in the art of Rio Grande do Norte. The analysis was based on the exploration of the videographic and photographic collection of the project, and other documents that record the artistic and life journey of Zé of China. For the collection of new data, a visit to the artist's workplace was made. As a result of the research, in addition to covering the artistic and historical context around Zé of China, a discussion was developed in the field of kinetic art and popular art, based on the contextualization of sculpture from the period of modern and contemporary art.
