Resumo:The urbanization process has been intense over the years in some capitals and metropolitan regions, causing an increase in the occupation of inappropriate areas such as riverbeds, environmental protection zones and hillsides, especially by the less favored population. The disorderly growth of urban areas generates a series of environmental problems, especially in relation to water resources, compromising their quality and the maintenance of their multiple uses. In Rio Grande do Norte this problem has shown itself to be present in the Rio Doce Hydrographic Basin (BHRD), which is responsible for the supply of a significant part of the population of the Metropolitan Region of Natal. This work aims to evaluate the impacts of land cover and use on the water quality of the Rio Doce, in the cities of Natal, Extremoz and São Gonçalo do Amarante (RN), trying to correlate the urban expansion in the basin with the deterioration of the quality of the river water. The methodology used is summarized in the analysis and supervised classification of Landsat 5 satellite images from the years 2008 and 2016, and in the analysis of the water quality of the Doce River between the years 2008 and 2016, from two of the four monitoring stations contained in the basin. The results showed a significant modification of urbanized area in the municipality of Extremoz, with a 31.27% decrease in native vegetation and a 51.37% increase in urbanized area, making it evident that anthropic actions have become increasingly present in the region, especially around the Extremoz Lagoon and on the banks of the Doce River. The water quality parameters analyzed showed a variation, even though in most of the time the quality of the river water is within the Class 2 limits. These variations, mainly in the concentration of phosphorus, may be associated with the anthropic activities carried out around the water body over the years.
