Resumo:The present study was based on the need to know and understand the possible relationships and interference of the neighborhoods demographic densities and the current situation of the sewage services regarding of groundwater nitrogen concentrations as nitrate compound, N (NO-3), from the urban area of the municipality of Currais Novos / RN. In this perspective, the research included the collection of data and information about the existing tubular wells, about the current situation of the implemented sewage services, in addition to the neighborhoods areas, their populations and respective demographic densities. The study also included field activities, with application of questionnaires to the tubular wells users, the identification of 90 (ninety) tubular wells in use, and the recording of the depths, the water level and the flow of these wells. After 60% (sixty percent) of the wells had been registered, whose spatial distribution was already representative of the entire urban area, 17 (seventeen) wells were selected for the collection of water and the analysis of the concentrations of N (NO-3). The water collections took place from August to October 2018. The results indicated that 94% (ninety-four percent) of the 17 wells analyzed presented concentrations of N (NO-3) above the maximum allowed value, which is 10 mg / L, as established in the Health Ministry Consolidation Ordinance No. 5, September 28, 2017, Annex XX and in the National Environment Council, according to Resolution No. 357, March 17, 2005. Regarding the possible relationships and interferences of the current sewage system in the nitrate concentrations of groundwater, no contamination was found. In this context, it is noteworthy that there is still at least 20% of the urban sewage with no collection and treatment at all, what can potentially to affect the groundwater quality, especially considering that it is a fissural rock profile, high vulnerable about this kind of contamination. On the other hand, there is currently a need to increase the water supply in the urban area of the municipality of Currais Novos, through the installation of tubular wells, due to the prolonged periods of water scarcity that always compromise the water supply that would normally come from their main dams. Thus, from the scenario raised, as a conclusion, it is worth highlighting: the drilling of tubular wells without the necessary studies on hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical conditions, combined with the application of management and control instruments, as well as the current sewage system conditions, indicates a potential concentration increase of Nitrogen (NO-3) in groundwater in the urban area of the studied municipality.
