It is necessary to seek the reduction and reuse of the solid waste produced and not only discard it in the landfills. One of many ways this happens is through selective collection programs along with cooperatives of recyclable material. We observed through the gravimetric composition made in the present study that in the urban area the municipality of macaíba presents 35% of recyclable material among the solid wastes generated. However, the main barrier to the implementation of a selective collection program is its high cost in relation to the conventional collection of solid waste. After the survey of how much the municipality of macaíba generates solid waste in the urban area and how much recyclable material is generated and disposed in the landfill that could be destined to the recycling cooperatives it was possible to determine that the implementation of a selective collection program in the municipality of macaíba would cost from 1,371.69 to 11,468.50 plus the coffers of the municipality if the selective collection could collect from 1% to 5% of the total solid residue generated in the urban area of the municipality of macaíba / RN A geração de resíduos sólidos vem crescendo com o avanço econômico e industrial principalmente nos grandes sempre urbanos e o seu gerenciamento e sua gestão de forma adequada são uma das dificuldades encontradas na sociedade atual. A forma de disposição final mais adequada hoje em dia é a utilização de aterros sanitários e no município de macaíba/RN isto não é diferente. É necessário buscar a redução e reutilização dos resíduos sólidos produzidos e não apenas descartar nos aterros sanitários. Uma de tantas formas disso acontecer é através de programas de coleta seletiva juntamente com cooperativas de material reciclável. Observamos através da composição gravimétrica feita no presente trabalho que na zona urbana o município de macaíba apresenta 35% de material reciclável dentre os resíduos sólidos gerados. Entretanto, a principal barreira para a implementação de um programa de coleta seletiva é o seu elevado custo em relação a coleta convencional dos resíduos sólidos.
