description The fuel retailers carry out activities with high polluting potential due to the storage of large quantities of liquid fuels. One of the main impacts caused by leakage of petroleum derived fuels is the contamination of soil and groundwater by toxic compounds, especially monoaromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, p-xylene and m-xylene (BTEX). In the municipality of Natal, groundwater has a determining role in public supply and increasingly has been used for commercial use and in services. In this perspective, the main objective of this research was to carry out an environmental diagnosis of fifteen (15) liquid fuel retailers in the city of Natal/RN and, thus, propose points that will form part of a network of qualitative monitoring of groundwater in the city to monitor the presence of BTEX compounds in the aquifer. The data were collected through the application of a questionnaire in the format checklist with questions regarding the current environmental legislation related to the sector, equipment and environmental controls required. A form was also used to guide the georeferenced cadastre of the tubular water wells in the reseller stations. The results allowed to conclude that only one (1) station was in disagreement with the environmental license and two (2) stations did not respect the minimum distance required in the fuel tank vent. In relation to environmental monitoring, it was possible to note the deficiency of the monitoring network. Only one (1) station had a tubular well in the project area and the existing monitoring network developed by Água Azul Program was inconsistent. In this way, it is necessary to select and propose sampling points to compose a network of qualitative monitoring of Natal’s groundwater, based on data from pre-existing tubular water wells.

Os postos revendedores de combustíveis realizam atividades com elevado potencial poluidor devido ao armazenamento de grande quantidade de combustíveis líquidos. Um dos principais impactos causado pelo vazamento de combustíveis derivados do petróleo é a contaminação do solo e das águas subterrâneas por compostos tóxicos, especialmente os hidrocarbonetos monoaromáticos como o benzeno, tolueno, etilbenzeno, o-xileno, p-xileno e m-xileno (BTEX). No município de Natal, a água subterrânea tem papel determinante no abastecimento público e cada vez mais tem sido utilizada para o uso comercial e em serviços. Nessa perspectiva, o presente estudo tem como objetivo realizar um diagnóstico ambiental de quinze (15) postos revendedores de combustíveis líquidos no município de Natal/RN e, assim, propor pontos que farão parte de uma rede de monitoramento qualitativa das águas subterrâneas na cidade quanto à presença dos compostos BTEX no aquífero. As informações foram coletadas através da aplicação de um questionário no formato checklist com perguntas referentes às legislações ambientais vigentes relacionadas ao setor, equipamentos e controles ambientais exigidos. Também foi utilizado um formulário para orientar o cadastro georreferenciado dos poços tubulares existentes nos postos revendedores. Os resultados permitiram concluir que somente um (1) posto estava em desconformidade quanto à licença ambiental e dois (2) postos não respeitavam a distância mínima exigida nos respiros. Em relação ao monitoramento ambiental, foi possível notar a deficiência da rede de monitoramento. Somente um (1) posto possuía poço tubular ativo na área do empreendimento e a rede de monitoramento existente desenvolvida pelo Programa Água Azul se mostrou inconsistente.
