Resumo:The unbridled growth of cities has led to several negative social and environmental impacts, including the large generation and environmentally inadequate final disposal of solid residues. Organic residues, in particular, occupy a high percentage of generation and disposal of the total volume of domestic solid residues of the country, and since there is no proper separation between organic matter and other urban solid waste, the final leachate produced can be contaminating. However, leachate coming only from organic matter is considered an excellent soil fertilizer and should be used. Therefore, looking at the local scenario, this work aimed to implement a pilot natural composting unit, through a small scale model at the Juvino Barreto Institute, Natal/RN. Although the project was not completely implemented, it was presented a solution for the treatment of organic waste and it was possible to verify the potential of the system, in comparison to the windrow model, for places with limited available space. This work also aimed to use composting as an environmental education tool, through a workshop and the application of the project in loco, transforming the commitment of employees and the quality of life of the elderly. It has been shown that despite the process has not occurred in an ideal way, it is important the development of future studies that allow the increase of its efficiency, such as the identification of an adequate C/N relation.
