Resumo:After decades growing in a disorderly manner, without prioritizing the environment and people, many Brazilian cities currently suffer from a lack of public open spaces dedicated to leisure. In this scenario, the city of Natal/RN has large green areas preserved in its urban fabric, however, lacks spaces that allow contact with these areas. The Unit of Conservation (Dunas Park), for example, is considered the largest Urban Park on dunes in Brazil, but of its 1,172 hectares, only 0.69% is for public use. Parallel to this, due to the urbanization process of the city, many areas of conflict have arisen since the creation of the UC in 1977.Currently, the portion of the park bordered by Eng. Roberto Freire Avenue, which has a high level of degradation, is threatened by the speculation of questionable projects that have been proposed for the site, such as the construction of a UFRN’s’ Technology Park and the restructuring of RN-063, which considered part of the park as an expansion’s area of the road. These actions show the lack of recognition of this area and the Dunas Park, because otherwise such projects would not even be considered. Therefore, taking all this into account, the project proposal seeks to ensure the preservation and recovery of this portion of the Dunas Park, through a new area of public use focused on leisure, contemplation and environmental education - uses foreseen in its legislation, in order to value and protect the Unit Conservation as a whole.
