Resumo:This present paper, entitled “The Seridó State Penitentiary: More than a prison, a social rehab and reintegration project. An analysis over its first running year, from 1998 to 1999”, aims at analyzing the resocialization discussion and the prison practice in the Seridó State Penitentiary, checking if the physical and organizational structures met the Law of Criminal Enforcement. The paper is divided into three chapters, having the first one focusing on the evolution of the right to punish those who transgress the rules of social behavior to the application of personal punishment over freedom and its rehabing objective, describing this path through Brazil as well; the second chapter focuses on the prison systems which served as a foundation for the current penitentiary establishments, and the application of the Criminal Enforcement Law 7.210, from July 11th, 1984, and its effects over the prison physical structure and over those sentenced in Brazil. The third chapter is reserved for the concept of resocialization and its challenges.
