Resumo:The process of population aging is a reality, both in Brazil and in other countries of the world. However, the reality of aging differs greatly from developed countries to those that are developing, as is the case in Brazil. In our country the process has taken place and is occurring very quickly if the State has had an initial concern with this process. This entails a wide range of challenges and social implications, given the social context of poverty, inequality and social exclusion in which Brazilians live. Therefore, the present work aims to contribute to the discussions on the theme of poverty, public policies and their relation with the elderly in Brazilian society and more specifically in the Municipality of Natal / RN. Seeking to bring to light the reality of how the elderly are living in the social context of the country and also of Natal / RN, and what are the implications of this social situation. In addition to making a study about the aging process, the work will also bring approaches on some concepts that greatly influence the quality of life of the elderly person. Having as one of the major influencers the current capitalist system, which affects not only the age group mentioned but the various layers of society, capitalism presents itself as a determinant of the socioeconomic reality of all, especially the elderly. The study will also provide a brief history about the creation and effectiveness of public policies and how they act and who their agents are responsible for their effectiveness. In this study we will analyze the laws and directives directed to the elderly population and we will see if in reality lived by this part of the population such rights guaranteed by the Federal Constitution / 1988 and the various legal apparatuses are actually put into practice and put into practice.
