Methods: The study had a sample of 40 preschoolers, 20 of whom were premature and 20 were born at term and attended in childcare clinics, the parents of the participants were interviewed individually to collect previous information and characterize the socioeconomic level. Language development was assessed using the Bayley III subtest, and the application and analysis were performed according to the instructions and the “stepped score” was considered for the analysis of the results. Results: The groups on average did not show significant differences in the language subtest and the same pattern was observed in the analysis of the test items. Conclusion: preterm and full-term children did not present significant differences when compared in the language subtest of the Bayley III instrument, and in the analysis of the test items, it did not show specific language difficulties for any of the groups. Objetivos: comparar o desempenho dos grupos no subteste de linguagem da Bayley III, verificando se haveria diferenças nos itens específicos em comunicação receptiva e expressiva. Métodos: O estudo contou com uma amostra de 40 pré-escolares, sendo 20 prematuros e 20 nascidos a termo atendidos em ambulatórios de puericultura, os pais dos participantes foram entrevistados individualmente para coleta de informações pregressas e caracterização do nível socioeconômico. O desenvolvimento de linguagem foi avaliado pelo subteste da Bayley III, e a aplicação e análise foram realizadas conforme as instruções e a “pontuação escalonada” foi considerada para a análise dos resultados. Resultados: Os grupos em média não apresentaram diferenças significativas no subteste de linguagem e o mesmo padrão foi observado na análise dos itens do teste.
