description Purpose: The study aims to understand the main impacts caused by acute respiratory syndromes in the daily lives of the elderly who are institutionalized, who are affected by oropharyngeal dysphagia. Research Strategy: This integrative review was based on studies taken from four databases: Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and CINAHL with analysis of studies in English, Portuguese and Spanish, in relation to acute respiratory syndromes in oropharyngeal dysphagia in the population a from 60 years of residents of longstay institutions for the elderly published throughout the period of time reading the titles and abstracts of the studies found in the search to select those that would be read in full and thus identify the articles that would be included in this review. The searches were carried out from may to june 2020. Results: 14 studies were included in which, the main acute respiratory syndrome listed was aspiration pneumonia, caused by oropharyngeal dysphagia, along with poor oral hygiene, cognitive decline, motor impairment and emotional / psychological factors. Conclusion: The main impacts of acute respiratory syndromes on oropharyngeal dysphagia were the increase in episodes of aspiration, growth of malnutrition, loss of muscle mass and fat, worsening cognitive decline, deterioration of the motor function of the elderly, the complication of other comorbidities and diseases, the expansion of psychological and emotional damage, increased isolation and fear in times of food and the demand for more complex care by institutions and their caregivers.

Objetivo: o estudo visa compreender os principais impactos causados pelas síndromes respiratórias agudas no cotidiano de idosos institucionalizados com disfagia orofaríngea. Estratégia de Pesquisa: Esta revisão integrativa baseou-se em estudos retirados de quatro bases de dados: Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science e CINAHL com análise de estudos em inglês, português e espanhol, em relação às síndromes respiratórias agudas em disfagia orofaríngea na população a partir de 60 anos dos residentes de Instituições de Longa Permanência para Idosos publicaram ao longo do tempo lendo os títulos e resumos dos estudos encontrados na busca para selecionar aqueles que seriam lidos na íntegra e, assim, identificar os artigos que seriam incluídos nesta revisão. As buscas foram realizadas de maio a junho de 2020. Resultados: Foram incluídos 14 estudos nos quais, a principal síndrome respiratória aguda listada foi pneumonia aspirativa, causada por disfagia orofaríngea, juntamente com má higiene oral, declínio cognitivo, comprometimento motor e fatores emocionais/psicológicos.
