Resumo:Introduction: The aging process gradually induces the decline of functional capacity, but through regular physical exercise functional losses can be minimized, important gains can be achieved when compared to sedentary individuals, such as decreased risk of falls. The Pilates Method has become a popular modality in recent years, an exercise system that makes it possible to exercise body and mind, stimulate postural correction, global muscle recruitment, challenge body stability and promote active stretching. Objective: This study aimed to review current evidence on the impact of Pilates Method practice on the functional capacity of the elderly. Methods: The search for the specific literature was made in the electronic databases PUBMED and PEDro, using the descriptors pilates method, elderly, functional capacity, physical function, functional independence. Results: Resulted in 134 clinical trials selected in the English language. Applying the exclusion criteria, 12 studies were included. The year of publication ranged from 2010 to 2019 and the sample from 18 to 110 elderly, with a minimum age of 60 years. The interventions ranged from one month to six months, with 60-minute sessions, two or three times a week. The exercises were performed on the ground (mat pilates) or on pilates appliances. Conclusion: The Pilates Method has been shown to promote beneficial effects on the functional capacity of the elderly, with significant improvement in the parameters of muscle strength, flexibility, static and dynamic balance and quality of life. However, the trials lacked sufficient methodological rigor to provide accurate results.
