Resumo:Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a disease which affects directly the metabolism, causing harm in many systems through the chronic hyperglycemia. The hyperglycemia also develops a hyperlipidemia and consequent inflammation, resulting in bone, muscular and vascular disorders. DM is directly associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures. The diabetic osteopenia is a decisive factor for that this happens, seen that chronic hyperglycemia leads to bone metabolism disorders, which reflect in the lowering of the biomechanical parameters and of the bone mass. The hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) has come to be a promising therapeutic modality to many diseases as chronic wounds and cerebral ischemia. Recent studies have revealed the positive effect of the HBO on the bone and its repair process, enhancing vascularization and increasing the biomechanical parameters. Objective: This aim of this study was to analyze the HBO effect in the on the bone biomechanics of diabetic animals. Methods: 27 animals were used, divided into 4 groups: control group (C), control with HBO group (C+HBO), diabetic group (DM) and diabetic with HBO group (DM+HBO). The animals were submitted to HBO using a protocol of 4 weeks of treatment 5 times a week, for 60 minutes with 100% of oxygen, with a pressure of 2,5 atm. Were analyzed the bone biomechanics characteristics in the variables maximus load, strength and strain. To the data that showed normal distribution it was used the one-way ANOVA test and post hoc of Tukey. It was considered p < 0,05 as statistically relevant. Results: The animals of the DM and DM+OHB groups showed hyperglycemia and lose weight when compared to the C and C+OHB groups. There was a decrease in maximum load of the DM group when compared to C group (p < 0,05). The DM+HBO group did not show statistical difference in comparison to the C group. In the other parameters there were no change. Conclusion: The DM reduced the maximum strength in the bone of diabetic rats. The DM+OHB group showed no difference compared to the C group.
