Resumo: | Background and objectives: In addition to physical symptoms, dysfunction temporomandibular is often associated with psychological complaints, including sleep disorders and depression. In view of the controversies presented by the researches regarding the psychosocial characteristics in dysfunction temporomandibular, the study aims to verify the correlations between the variables: symptom time, pain, depression, joint range of motion and sleep quality in patients with temporomandibular dysfunction. Method: Descriptive cross-sectional study of 52 patients diagnosed with temporomandibular dysfunction. The RDC-TMD / axis I questionnaire was used to select the sample, to measure the intensity of spontaneous pain in the TMJ, the Visual Analog Scale of Pain was used, a digital caliper was used to measure the range of motion, to assess the quality of the Sleep, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was applied and the Beck Depression Inventory was used for the investigation of depression. For statistical analysis and used or Spearman correlation test, being adopted level of significance α <0.05. Results: There was a correlation between mouth opening amplitude and variables, symptom time (p = 0.0058), intensity of spontaneous pain (p = 0.0015) and joint pain at palpation (p = 0.0453). In relation to the variable spontaneous pain, a correlation between this and the symptom time (0.0069) occurred. There was also a correlation between muscle pain and palpation and sleep quality variables (p = 0.0027) and symptom time (p = 0.0156).Conclusion: Changes in sleep quality are present in patients with temporomandibular dysfunction, and these alterations are related to muscular pain, but the same did not occur with depressive symptoms. |
