Resumo:Introduction: The Pilates Method (PM) may represent an excellent exercise proposal for women in menopause, as it provides an improvement not only in physical aspects, but also in mental health. Objectives: To investigate the effects of mat Pilates on posterior chain flexibility, functional capacity (FC), and to observe its consequences on quality of life (QoL) and menopausal symptoms. Methods: The assessment was performed by sit-and-reach (TSA), 6-minute walk test (6MWT), sit-and-stand test (SAS) and instruments: Menopause Rating scale (MRS) and Utian Quality of life (UQoL). The Pilates program lasted eight weeks. The data were presented in a descriptive way. Results: Four women with a median (Mdn) of 48 years of age, who were sedentary, with Mdn = 2 years of menopause, who were overweight and were not taking hormone replacement therapy participated in the study. The volunteers reached a greater distance in the TSA when compared the pre (Mdn = 27.7 cm) and post (Mdn = 29.7 cm) values. There was an increase in the number of repetitions for SAS from 10.5 to 14. There was an increase in the distance walked in the 6MWT according to the pre (Mdn = 527m) and post (Mdn = 553.5m) intervention values. The symptomatology presented reduction for all categories evaluated by the MRS, and the total sum fell from severe to moderate severity after the intervention. The total QoL assessed by the UQoL was higher in the sample studied, comparing the values before (Mdn = 74.50) and after (Mdn = 87) the Pilates practice. Conclusion: The PM seems to be a resource capable of offering benefits for all analyzed variables.
