Lately, many studies have been published about its action in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and in several other biological activities, such as antioxidant, tissue protector, antihypertensive and immunomodulator. However, its growing irrational use by the population has triggered the prohibition of the use and commercialization of Moringa-based products in Brazil by the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). In this scenario, this study aimed to conduct a literature review to assess the safety of use and the potential antidiabetic action of M. oleifera leaves. For this purpose, 46 non-clinical studies (12 - in vitro/31 - in vivo and 3 - in vivo toxicological) and 12 clinical studies were analyzed. The studies analyzed pointed to a promising antidiabetic activity. However, the lack of methodological standardization of the studies weakened the strength of scientific evidence on their efficacy and safety, so that more studies must be tissue in order to prove them. It should also be noted that no adverse effects were reported during clinical studies. A Moringa oleifera L. (Moringaceae) vem se popularizando no Brasil, devido seu elevado teor nutricional, sendo amplamente utilizada na complementação alimentar. Ultimamente, muitos estudos vêm sendo publicados sobre sua ação no tratamento de diabetes mellitus e em diversas outras atividades biológicas, como antioxidante, protetora de tecidos, antihipertensiva e imunomoduladora. Porém, seu crescente uso irracional, por parte da população, desencadeou a proibição do uso e da comercialização de produtos à base de Moringa no Brasil pela Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA). Nesse cenário, este estudo teve como objetivo realizar uma revisão de literatura para avaliar a segurança do uso e a potencial ação antidiabética das folhas de M. oleifera. Para tanto, foram analisados 46 estudos não clínicos (12 - in vitro/31 - in vivo e 3 – in vivo toxicológicos) e 12 estudos clínicos. Os estudos analisados apontaram para uma promissora atividade antidiabética. Todavia, a ausência de padronização metodológica dos estudos enfraqueceu a força das evidências científicas sobre sua eficácia e segurança, de forma que mais estudos devem ser tecidos a fim de comprová-las.
