Resumo:Inventory management, although widely discussed in the academic and business literature, still stands out as one of the operational bottlenecks responsible for high costs and low efficiency of processes, negatively impacting competitiveness. As a way to serve the customer with greater agility and assertiveness, retail companies have adopted the formation of distribution centers as a strategy to add value to the business with a focus on the customer. This requires the help of management tools and methods that can bring operations to effectiveness. The picking process (separation of goods), given its excessive handling, is among the steps that can increase the operational cost, increase the loss due to damage and delay customer service, requiring an efficient organization of the items in inventories. The present study sought to understand and analyze the picking processes of a DC in a retail construction company, seeking to provide proposals for improvements based on the assessment of criticality and importance (ABC Classification) of the items stocked. The results indicated the category of flooring and coverings products as the most critical of the CD, highlighting 140 items of importance with their respective suppliers, which provided elements for proposing a better mapping of the addressing of the products in the stock and its organization by proximity to the point of delivery. As a contribution, the diagnosis of the corrent situation and its evaluation indicate possibilities of improvement and its implementation of the suggestions made can significantly contribute to the consolidation of the company's strategy.
