Resumo: | Aging, which can be seen to increase through demographic transition, encompasses several factors, such as physiological, cultural and psychological changes. The objective of the study was to identify the health conditions and nutritional status of a group of elderly people in the region of Trairi / RN. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative study conducted with (n = 42) elderly people. A questionnaire with two stages was applied: in the first, a questionnaire regarding health conditions was applied. Subsequently, the anthropometric assessment was performed. The results showed a prevalence of the age group between 60 to 75 years (66.7%), highlighting the female gender (71.4%). The diseases with the highest prevalence were: Hypertension (59.5%) and Diabetes Mellitus (33.3%). It should also be noted that most of them do not practice physical activity (40.5%). Anthropometric data showed that the majority presented obesity according to the body mass index BMI (57.1%), high risk for the development of chronic diseases according to the abdominal circumference (81.9%) and absence of loss of muscle mass, according to the calf circumference (81.9%). When associating anthropometric data, a significant association was observed between BMI and abdominal and calf circumference (p = 0.00 and p = 0.031), possibly highlighting changes in body composition as a risk for the worsening of existing chronic diseases . Thus, the importance of healthier living habits and health promotion is highlighted as a way of avoiding major health compromises among these elderly people. |
