description Objective: Assess the relation between thoracoabdominal mobility and hours of life in term newborns (NBs). Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study, approved by the institutional research ethics committee (8512/15). Newborns of both sexes were filmed for 2 minutes in supine position, with markers in the lateral region of the torso, upper limbs in flexion, abduction, external rotation, hip flexed at approximately 110º, with maximum exposure of the thoracoabdominal region. Mobility was assessed by videogrammetry using MATLAB® software, and expressed in metric units (cm2) as the difference between the highest and lowest expansibility of the thoracoabdominal, thoracic and abdominal compartments, for each respiratory cycle. The sample consisted of 26 NBs, divided into 2 groups, up to 25h old/n=14 and > 25h old/n=12. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to determine data normality. The Mann-Whitney, Fisher’s Exact and simple linear regression tests were applied to determine the relation between respiratory rate (RR) and thoracoabdominal mobility (TA). A 5% significance level was adopted, with p < 0.05. Results: The intergroup predominance was for boys and thoracoabdominal mobility was the only variable that exhibited a statistically significant intergroup difference, showing that the fewer the hours of life, the greater the mobility, with more participation from the abdominal compartment. In regression analysis, RR explained 31% of the variation in thoracoabdominal mobility (p=0.002). Conclusion: The fewer the hours of life, the greater the thoracoabdominal mobility of the NBs, with a predominance of the abdominal compartment.
