Resumo:The present work aims to understand what is the role of music teaching in the Recorder Band belonging to an NGO called Núcleo de Amparo ao Menor, an institution that maintains the Music and Citizenship Project implemented in the Felipe Camarão Neighborhood, in Natal-RN . As a methodology, the semi-structured interview with participants and ex-participants of the project was used, seeking to deepen the understanding about the opinions of the interviewees about the musical learning of the flute band and how it affected / affects the social development of those involved in this process. In view of the data analysis, it was possible to notice that the teaching of music in the social project promotes the development of contextualist and essentialist functions in an interdisciplinary way. Thus, both are part of the reality of all respondents, whether one developing the technical, musical and performance skills of these individuals, or even preparing them, from this formative process, for demands that involve their lives as citizens.
