description In 2017, the streaming platform Hulu premiered the first season of the series The Handmaid’s Tale, an adaptation of the eponymous book by author Margaret Atwood. The context portrays an alternative reality, in which the United States suffered a political coup and through it there was the implementation of the theocratic regime of Gilead. The series quickly won over critics and audiences, bringing a dystopian plot full of symbolism and visual elements that dialogue with the unstable socio-political moment faced by countries like Brazil and the United States in the same period. The production gained prominence through shares and discussions on digital social media, becoming part of the series culture, which has been developing over the past few years, mainly with digital audiovisual platforms. Therefore, this study defends the hypothesis that there are close and possible links between the series and the current reality, which reveal a symbolic clash between the advance of the struggle of feminism and the current conservative governments, grounded in the chauvinism embedded in the culture of contemporary societies. To highlight these aspects, the film analysis methodology was used (VANOYE; GOLIOTLÉTÉ, 2002; SORLIN, 1985), to understand the intentionality of the diegéticos and visual elements present in the first season of the series, with greater emphasis on the episode Offred. Also, Cultural Studies (WILLIAMS, 1979) were used in dialogue with other authors (ELIAS, 2011; FOUCAULT, 2014; ADORNO, 2002; JENKINS, 2008; JOST, 2012; MORIN, 2002; BAUMAN, 2017) to exercise understanding of the materiality of culture and its current social relations through streaming media. This enabled the realization of a deeper sociological reading, which revealed themes such as the rescue of "values", fears, surveillance and control, in dialogue with contemporary society.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES No ano de 2017, a plataforma de streaming Hulu estreou a primeira temporada da série The Handmaid’s Tale (O Conto da Aia), adaptação do livro homônimo da autora Margaret Atwood. O contexto retrata uma realidade alternativa, em que os Estados Unidos sofreram um golpe político e, com isso, houve a implementação do regime teocrático de Gilead. A série rapidamente conquistou a crítica e o público, ao trazer um enredo distópico repleto de simbolismos e elementos visuais que dialogam com o momento sociopolítico instável enfrentado por países como Brasil e EUA no mesmo período. Nesse sentido, a produção ganhou destaque através de compartilhamentos e discussões nas mídias sociais digitais, tornando-se parte da cultura das séries, que vem se desenvolvendo nos últimos anos, principalmente com as plataformas audiovisuais digitais. Diante disso, este estudo defende a hipótese de que existem elos próximos e possíveis entre a série e a realidade atual, que revelam um choque simbólico entre o avanço da luta do feminismo e os atuais governos conservadores, embasados pelo machismo introjetado na cultura das sociedades contemporâneas. Para evidenciar estes aspectos, foi empregada a metodologia de análise fílmica (VANOYE; GOLIOT-LÉTÉ, 2002; SORLIN, 1985), no intuito de compreender a intencionalidade dos elementos diegéticos e visuais presentes na primeira temporada da série, com maior ênfase no episódio Offred. Além disso, utilizou-se dos Estudos Culturais (WILLIAMS, 1979) em diálogo com outros autores (ELIAS, 2011; FOUCAULT, 2014; ADORNO, 2002; JENKINS, 2008; JOST, 2012; MORIN, 2002; BAUMAN, 2017), para exercitar a compreensão sobre a materialidade da cultura e suas atuais relações sociais através das mídias de streaming.
