Understanding the onset, location and magnitude of these changes is key to future mitigation, conservation and restoration efforts. Although this implies a great research effort, it can be facilitated if we add different sources of information, such as the knowledge retained by different reef users. We assessed changes in the landscape of South Atlantic reefs in their two main regions (tropical and subtropical, all located in Brazil) by interviewing different key stakeholders: fishers, divers, and researchers. For 57% of the stakeholders, the health of South Atlantic reef environments has been declining since the 1970s, evidenced by the decline of herbivorous parrotfishes (Labridae: Scarinae) and reef builders (massive corals). These same stakeholders also noticed an increase in algae and small damselfishes (Pomacentridae) and indicated the recovery of sea turtle populations. Accessing the memory of reef users allows one to date the beginning of change processes, identify regionalities and specificities in them, in addition to identifying groups of organisms most vulnerable to changes. This information is important to better target protection and conservation efforts, especially in developing countries, where marine research is relatively new, insufficient, or little applied to conservation. Recifes são ecossistemas sensíveis que vem passando por mudanças aceleradas, causadas tanto por mudanças globais quanto por impactos locais. Entender onde, quando e grão grande foram estas mudanças é chave para futuros esforços de mitigação, conservação e restauração. Isto implica em grandes esforços de pesquisa, o que pode ser facilitado se agregarmos fontes diversas de informação, como o conhecimento retido por diferentes usuários recifais. Avaliamos as mudanças na paisagem dos recifes brasileiros em duas grandes regiões (tropical e subtropical) entrevistando pescadores, mergulhadores e pesquisadores. Para 57% dos atores, a saúde dos ambientes recifais brasileiros declinou desde a década de 1970, evidenciado pelo declínio de peixes herbívoros do grupo Labridae: Scarinae (budiões) e de construtores de recifes (corais massivos). Por outro lado, estes atores detectam aumento de algas e de peixes de pequeno porte da família Pomacentridae (peixes donzela), além de apontarem recuperação de populações de tartarugas marinhas. Acessar a memória de usuários de recifes permite datar o início de processos de mudanças, identificar regionalidades e especificidades nos mesmos, além de identificar grupos de organismos mais vulneráveis às mudanças.
