description It starting from the conception of literacy as a social practice, reading and writing being inserted into social and linguistic practices that make real use of the language within specific contexts and in varied domains, it is intended in this research to describe the events and practices of literacy during the Ordinary Sessions of the municipal legislature. With regard to theoretical assumptions, we have adopted the foundations of literacy studies seen as a social practice and supported by (BARTON; HAMILTON, 1993; 1998; 2000; KLEIMAN, 1995, 2008; STREET, 1984; OLIVEIRA, 2008; 2010), in the foundations that theme language and work (SOUZA-E-SILVA, 2002; DUARTE; FEITOSA, 1998) and in the perspective of labor literacy (PAZ, 2008). We also taking some considerations about the concept of beliefs (BARCELOS, 2006). The present study is inserted in the field of investigation of Applied Linguistics (LA), taking as theoretical contributions the postulates of Moita Lopes (2006), Pennycook (2006), Signorini (2006) and Celani (2000), emphasizing the problematizing character of area , which is concerned with investigating beyond the field of language teaching. The research adopts the methodological assumptions of qualitative research of ethnographic inspiration (BOGDAN; BIKLEN, 1994; CANZADO, 1994; CHIZZOTTI, 2005; ANDRÉ, 1995). It was held with the collaboration of city councilmen who constitute the seventeenth legislature of a interior's city of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The Corpus of the research was generated through the observation of literacy events carried out during the legislative sessions of said City Hall, in addition to semi-structured interviews. The discussion of the data indicates that the literacy events investigated play a fundamental role in the lives of citizens, considering the power that play of reading and writing practices with respect to decision-making that will drive the investments made by the executive branch to implement the public policies to improve the lives of the population. The relevance of this study is found in the contributions that it will can to provide to the language studies, especially to Literacy Studies focused in the work activities.

Partindo da concepção de letramento como prática social, sendo a leitura e a escrita inseridas em práticas sociais e linguísticas que fazem uso real da língua em contextos específicos e em domínios variados, pretende-se, nesta pesquisa, descrever como se efetivam as sessões ordinárias do legislativo municipal como eventos de letramento. No que concerne aos pressupostos teóricos, adotam-se os fundamentos dos Estudos de Letramento vistos como prática social (BARTON; HAMILTON, 1993; 1998; 2000; KLEIMAN, 1995; 2008; STREET, 1984; OLIVEIRA, 2008; 2010); nos embasamentos que tematizam Linguagem e Trabalho (SOUZA-E-SILVA, 2002; DUARTE; FEITOSA, 1998) e na perspectiva do Letramento Laboral (PAZ, 2008). Utilizam-se, também, alguns pressupostos referentes aos estudos de crenças (BARCELOS, 2006). O presente estudo está inserido no campo de investigação da Linguística Aplicada (LA), tomando como aportes teóricos os postulados de Moita Lopes (2006), Pennycook (2006), Signorini (2006) e Celani (2000), ressaltando o caráter problematizador da área, a qual se preocupa em dar conta de investigar além do campo de ensino de línguas. A pesquisa adota os pressupostos metodológicos da investigação qualitativa de inspiração etnográfica (ANDRÉ, 1995; BOGDAN; BIKLEN, 1994; CANÇADO, 1994; CHIZZOTTI, 2005), realizada com a colaboração de vereadores que constituem a décima sétima legislatura da Câmara de Vereadores de uma cidade do interior do estado do Rio Grande do Norte. O corpus da pesquisa foi gerado por meio da observação de sessões ordinárias e extraordinárias, de entrevistas semiestruturadas e de notas de campo. A discussão dos dados indica que os eventos de letramento investigados assumem um papel fundamental na vida dos cidadãos, tendo em vista o poder que exercem as práticas de leitura e escrita no tocante à tomada de decisões que irão conduzir os investimentos feitos pelo poder executivo, visando implementar as políticas públicas para a melhoria de vida da população. Esses eventos apresentam características definidas em termos de participantes, domínio, artefatos e atividades.
