description Based on the premise of the cultural and social relevance of music bands, a qualitative research was carried out in order to understand how the cultural and educational dimensions of Dom Pompeu Music Band in the city of Alto Santo (CE), are articulated and affect the process of building cultural citizenship. The methodological basis was the case study in association with ethnographic and ethnomusicological tools. The choice of this method enabled the gathering of a greater number of information, through the use of several techniques of data collection, thus allowing a detailed understanding of the object of study. For the construction of the data, observations and semi-structured interviews with the cultural agents of the city were used mainly. The concepts of social institution, tradition, cultural citizenship, social field and educational and cultural dimensions were taken as theoretical support, from Chauí (1995, 2003), Giddens (1991, 2003), Berger and Berger (1977), Bourdieu (1983, 1989, 2007) and Penna (2010). From the data constructed and analyzed, it was possible to verify that the music band is an institution that contributes to the democratization of access to music and its production, and, thus, to cultural citizenship, by enabling citizens not only to enjoy cultural/musical goods, but that they are active agents of its elaboration, in the local musical production, from the performance of the band. It was also verified the fundamental role of the band's conductor, so that educational, cultural and citizenship actions take place in the city.

Tendo como premissa a relevância cultural e social das bandas de música, realizou-se uma pesquisa, de caráter qualitativo, buscando compreender como as dimensões culturais e educativas da Banda de Música Dom Pompeu da cidade de Alto Santo (CE), são articuladas e incidem no processo de construção da cidadania cultural. A base metodológica foi o estudo de caso etnográfico, que possibilitou o levantamento de um grande número de informações, através da utilização de diversas técnicas de coleta de dados, permitindo, assim, uma compreensão detalhada do objeto de estudo. Para a construção dos dados foram utilizadas observações e entrevistas semiestruturadas realizadas com os agentes culturais da cidade. Foram tomados como aporte teórico, os conceitos de instituição social, tradição, cidadania cultural, campo social e dimensões educativas e culturais, a partir de Chauí (1995, 2003), Giddens (1991, 2003), Berger e Berger (1977), Bourdieu (1983, 1989, 2007) e Penna (2010). Com base nos dados construídos e analisados, constatei que a banda de música é uma instituição que contribui para a democratização do acesso à música, e sua produção, e, assim, para a cidadania cultural, ao possibilitar que os cidadãos do município não apenas usufruam dos bens culturais/musicais, mas que sejam agentes ativos da sua elaboração, na produção musical local, a partir da atuação da banda.
