Resumo:The main objective of this research wasto investigate the Habitat of the Maria da Paz Settlement, which was conceived and built collectively, in order to understand the possibilities of appropriation by its residents, based on the daily life experienced by them. The Settlement, located in the municipality of João Câmara-RN, was built within 2003 and 2004 by as assisted task force, a partnership consisting of the GERAH /UFRN, the MST (management and settlers) and the INCRA (superintendents and technicians). After almost two decades, from conception and collaborative construction, arose the following question: 'How was the habitat of the Maria da Paz Settlement appropriated by its residents?' To answer that, we study the relationship between the experience of a housing joint effort in a rural settlement coordinated by the MST, and it's current appropriation. For the main methodological procedure, the progressiveregressive method stands out, directed to the production of space, based on the work of Henri Lefebvre. Its empirical survey was also based on the ISU inhabitant's speech technique, under his coordination. The understanding of this appropriation starts from the present looking to the past, adopting the collective experience as its historical landmark, not for explaining, but understanding the ongoing processes that create what is. Appropriation is regarded as a poetic dimension of its residents, for while it reveals the space usage and limitations of those residents, it also illuminates to new possibilities. All the while, there is the need to understand how collective aspects continue to thrive and appropriate in the design of the space, through discourse and actions of its residents.
