The factors that led to construction of public cemetery in Jardim do Seridó, a city from Rio Grande do Norte. How factors resulted in funeral cultural changes and social processes of perception about the death and dying. The cemetery discussed has been used since 1857 that year the congregation death book begins. The liturgical blessing of cemetery was on 12th March 1858, by Priest Francisco Justino Pereira de Brito. Influence of State and clerics about construction of extra-wall cemeteries in the country were questions as a relation between political powers and religious powers regarding hygienist speeches and the spaces of death, in the 19th century. Based on supposition the cemetery is an integral part of every city, when should think about urbanisation plans for city, one must keep in mind where the people who have their final destination to go. A purpose inserted on study is to reflect about factors that contribute to construction of the public cemetery along funeral transformations in context. About the diseases that affected all region and how much that health factors were associated with changes in the funeral spaces from Jardim do Seridó. The study has carried out by death books, laws, town decrees, wills, posture codes, newspapers and photographs.

O presente trabalho analisa, a partir das falas e relatórios dos presidentes de província, como se deram os discursos médicos e higienistas na segunda metade do século XIX, no interior da província do Rio Grande do Norte. Foram analisados os fatores que levaram à construção do cemitério público de Jardim do Seridó, município localizado no interior do Rio Grande do Norte, e como esses fatores implicaram nas mudanças culturais fúnebres e os processos sociais da percepção da morte e do morrer. O cemitério discutido na referida pesquisa continua sendo utilizado desde 1857, ano em que dá início o livro de óbito da paróquia. A benção litúrgica do cemitério se deu no dia 12 de março de 1858, pelo Padre Francisco Justino Pereira de Brito. A influência do Estado e dos clérigos nas construções de cemitérios extra muros no país foram questões pensadas como relação entre poderes políticos e religiosos a respeito dos discursos higienistas e os espaços da morte, no século XIX. Partindo do pressuposto que o cemitério é a parte integrante de toda cidade, uma vez que para se pensar planos de urbanização para a cidade deve-se ter em mente o lugar para onde vão as pessoas que têm seu destino final, o propósito inserido a esse estudo é refletir a respeito dos fatores que contribuíram para a construção do cemitério público e como se deram, a partir de então, as transformações fúnebres nesse contexto. Foi pensado a respeito das moléstias que atingiram a região e o quanto esses fatores sanitários estavam associados às transformações nos espaços fúnebres de Jardim.
