literacy has been associated with adverse health outcomes. Adolescent
pregnancy is also related to poorer health outcomes for mother and child
compared to adulthood pregnancy and low health literacy may be a contributor
to these outcomes. Objective: To evaluate health literacy of pregnant adolescents
and young adults from rural area of northeastern Brazil and its associated factors.
Methods: This is an observational and analytical cross-sectional study, which is
part of a longitudinal pilot study, AMOR (Adolescence and Motherhood
Research). The sample consisted of 41 pregnant adolescents (13 to 18 years
old) and 45 pregnant young adults (23 to 28 years old) living in the Trairi region,
located in the Rio Grande do Norte state, during the third trimester of their first
pregnancy. Health literacy was assessed by the Short Assesment of Health
Literacy for Portuguese-Speaking Adults (SAHLPA, score from 0-18, inadequate
if <15). In addition, we collected sociodemographic data, prenatal information and
social support though the Social Networks and Social Support of the International
Mobility in Aging Study. Multiple linear regression models were used to assess
which variables remained associated with the SAHLPA-18 score. Results:
Adolescents had worse SAHLPA scores than adults (p <0.001), as well as a
higher percentage of inadequate literacy (95.1% versus 53.3%, p <0.001). In the
multivariate analysis, poorer health literacy results were also found among those
who reported that their school performance was lower when compared to peers
(β= -2.843, p <0.001) and who reporting insufficient income (β= -2.775, p =0.014).
Conclusion: Higher rates of inadequate health literacy were found, mainly among
adolescent mothers. Policies targeting to improve health information access for
young populations from rural low-income areas are needed. |

Introdução: A alfabetização em saúde é a capacidade cognitiva de entender e interpretar o significado das informações de saúde na forma escrita, falada e digital, e o baixo nível de alfabetização em saúde tem sido associado a desfechos adversos em saúde. A gravidez na adolescência também está relacionada a piores resultados de saúde para a mãe e a criança quando comparadas à gravidez na vida adulta e o baixo alfabetismo em saúde pode ser um dos contribuintes para esses resultados. Objetivo: Avaliar o alfabetismo em saúde de gestantes adolescentes e adultas jovens de uma área rural do Nordeste do Brasil e os fatores associados. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo do tipo observacional e analítico, de caráter transversal, que faz parte de um estudo piloto longitudinal, o AMOR (Adolescence and Motherhood Research). A amostra foi composta por 41 gestantes adolescentes (13 a 18 anos) e 45 gestantes adultas jovens (23 a 28 anos) residentes na região do Trairi, localizada no estado do Rio Grande do Norte, que estavam no terceiro trimestre de sua primeira gravidez. O alfabetismo em saúde foi avaliado pelo Short Assesment of Health Literacy for Portuguese-Speaking Adults (SAHLPA, escore varia de 0-18 pontos, sendo inadequado se <15). Além disso, foram coletados dados sociodemográficos, informações sobre o pré-natal e suporte social pelo Social Networks and Social Support do International Mobility in Aging Study. Modelos de regressão linear múltipla foram usados para avaliar quais variáveis permaneceram associadas ao escore SAHLPA-18. Resultados: As adolescentes apresentaram piores escores do SAHLPA que as adultas (p<0,001), bem como maior porcentagem de alfabetismo inadequado (95,1% vs 53,3%, p<0,001). Na análise multivariada, piores resultados do alfabetismo em saúde também foram encontrados para as que referiram que o seu desempenho escolar era inferior quando comparado aos colegas (β= -2,843, p<0,001) e que relataram renda insuficiente (β= -2,775, p=0,014). Conclusão: Foram encontradas taxas elevadas de alfabetização em saúde inadequada, principalmente entre adolescentes.
