description The pressure for a new pattern of sustainable development has required of modern organizations the search for competitiveness, but respecting and considering environmental issues. In this sense, a tool that acts in the implementation of structured strategies is the environmental management system (EMS), such assessments are not performed on specific objects, like the EMS. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the resources and capabilities (environmental strategies) of the EMS adopted by the Verdegreen Hotel, identifying which of these have the potential to generate competitive advantage. For this, this exploratory-descriptive casestudy used as data collection tools: a bibliographic survey, semi-structured interviews, documental research and direct observation. The interpretation of the results and the consolidation of information were conducted from a qualitative approach, using two techniques of data analysis, namely: content analysis and analysis through VRIO model. The results show that the hotel is quite structured in relation to their EMS, and it has benefits related to improvement of the management of environmental factors, to the strengthening of its image and to the gains in competitiveness. On the other hand, the main difficulties for the implementation of the system are related to employees and suppliers. With regard to environmental strategies adopted, of the 25 strategies identified, 10 showed the potential to generate competitive advantage

Nesse sentido, uma ferramenta que atua na implantação de estratégias estruturadas é o sistema de gestão ambiental (SGA), que tem como foco a melhoria do desempenho ambiental. Essa melhoria, por sua vez, pode proporcionar às organizações diversos benefícios, como a obtenção de vantagens competitivas, passíveis de mensuração a partir de diferentes perspectivas. Uma dessas perspectivas é a aplicação do modelo VRIO, fundamentado pela resource-based view (RBV), segundo a qual a heterogeneidade entre as empresas decorre de diferenças entre os seus recursos internos e capacidades. Contudo, apesar de serem encontrados na literatura alguns estudos que avaliam o potencial competitivo de determinadas organizações, essas avaliações não têm sido realizadas em objetos específicos, a exemplo dos SGAs. Desse modo, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os recursos e as capacidades (estratégias ambientais) do SGA adotado pelo Verdegreen Hotel, a fim de identificar quais deles possuem potencial de gerar vantagem competitiva. Para tanto, este estudo de caso de caráter exploratório-descritivo utilizou como ferramentas de coleta de dados: pesquisa bibliográfica, entrevista semiestruturada, pesquisa documental e observação direta. A interpretação dos resultados e a consolidação das informações foram realizadas a partir de uma abordagem qualitativa, em que se utilizaram duas técnicas de análise de dados, quais sejam: análise de conteúdo e análise por meio do modelo VRIO. Os resultados encontrados mostram que o hotel está bastante estruturado em relação ao seu SGA, além de a empresa ter alcançado benefícios referentes à melhoria da gestão dos fatores ambientais, ao fortalecimento da imagem e aos ganhos em competitividade. Entretanto, as principais dificuldades para a implantação do sistema estão relacionadas aos colaboradores e fornecedores.
