Resumo: | The Barreiras Formation is a geological unit of sedimentary nature that outcrops in a strip along approximately 4000 km in the Brazilian coast. In the Northeast Region, the Barreiras Formation supports multiple cities and their infrastructure. This study aimed to jointly review, summarize and interpret the various works done on the geotechnical aspects of Barreiras in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Aspects of mineral composition, geotechnical characterization and mechanical properties of the sediments were analysed. The Barreiras Formation presents profiles with sandy lateritic sediments on the surface, followed by a layer of ferruginous cementation (laterites) and clayey sediment layers on the base. The permeability is low, the base material is collapsible and the whole profile presents low degree of saturation. strength and stress-strain behaviour are strongly influenced by cementation between particles and by suction |
