Resumo:The present study aims to determine the profile of students entering the course the distance of Public Administration at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Such a study is justified given the context attached to the decision making in organizations, which in the case of higher education institutions become more complex because the mission assigned to them. The article is justified also by the strong and rapid expansion of undergraduate courses at a distance, which become increasingly necessary scientific studies that attest to the management of courses. For this purpose, the methodology is characterized as inductive, using exploratory and descriptive, qualitative approach, applied in SEDIS (Department of Distance Education, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte) specifically in the graduate in Public Administration. The target population consisted of 420 elements, characterized as a census survey, 180 responses, representing 42.8% of the students of the course. The study results indicate that most students are from public schools and graduated from high school before 2004. Slightly more than half answered already enrolled in another degree course and the lack of qualification implies a gross income of up to two minimum wages. The results also show that the flexibility offered by distance learning course was the main reason for choosing the course in distance education mode and 70% of students reside more than 100 miles from the pole face. We conclude that the students know the profile of a graduate course in the distance, as well as the face, is of great relevance for teachers and coordinators for the activities of academic management
