description The terrestrial vegetation cover has long aroused the interest of humanity, which in the course of time has turned to it in different ways for the knowledge of its biological, ecological and geographical characteristics, in addition to discovering the potential for its exploration. In the midst of this constellation of interests, Cartography arrives in the 20th century consolidated as an important technical tool for reading, interpreting and planning land cover, serving in the identification of floristic groups and their explanation in conjunction with the other spatial elements, starting from this serving the current challenge of addressing the needs for use and preservation. Marking several occasions in the course of that century, the vegetation maps of Rio Grande do Norte prepared by institutions such as the IOCS (works against droughts), the SUDENE (regional planning), RADAMBRASIL, mapping of natural resources; among others, they are a reflection and process of this search for knowledge for planned action. In view of this, this dissertation was based on the objective of understanding the role of vegetation coverage cartography, elaborated by governmental institutions, in the constitution and socioenvironmental management of potiguar territory. To this end, a multi-referential methodological basis was established, composed of the precepts of the History of Cartography, in the analysis of the context of ancient maps, and of Geospatial Analysis, applied to Landsat products obtained in the last 16 years of the century. The examination of the cartographic set presented the vegetation maps as part of the technical environment, which sheds light on the elements of interest to society, whether economic or ecological, while the contours of the anthropization process are also recorded. In view of this, the empiry also reaffirmed the epistemological and theoretical dimensions of cartography - respectively related to knowledge and interpretation and analysis -, since both the old pieces and those elaborated for the study supported the geographic reflection of the socio-environmental processes, allowing the understanding the transformations and restructuring that have occurred in certain places in the territory of Rio Grande do Norte, whose reflections are observed in the landscape and in the region, but which in territorial management allow them to be thought of as a resource and tool.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES A cobertura vegetal terrestre desde muito despertou interesse da humanidade, que no decorrer dos tempos a ela se voltou de maneiras diversas para o conhecimento de suas características biológicas, ecológicas e geográficas, além da descoberta das potencialidades para sua exploração. Em meio a essa constelação de interesses, a Cartografia chega ao século XX consolidada como importante ferramenta técnica de leitura, interpretação e planificação da cobertura do solo, servindo na identificação dos grupos florísticos e na sua explicação em conjunção com os demais elementos espaciais, a partir disso servindo ao atual desafio de equacionar as necessidades de utilização e preservação. Em várias ocasiões no decorrer do mencionado século, os mapas de vegetação do Rio Grande do Norte elaborados por instituições tais como a Inspetoria de Obras Contra as Secas (IOCS), a Superintendência de Desenvolvimento do Nordeste (SUDENE) e o RADAMBRASIL, dentre outros, são reflexo e processo dessa busca de conhecimento para a ação planificada. Em face disso, esta dissertação se pautou no objetivo de entender o papel da cartografia da cobertura vegetal, elaborada pelas Instituições governamentais, na constituição e gestão socioambiental do território potiguar. Para tal, se estabeleceu uma base metodológica multirreferencial composta pelos preceitos da História da Cartografia, na análise do contexto dos mapas antigos, e da Análise Geoespacial, aplicada aos produtos Landsat obtidos nos últimos 16 anos do período. O exame do conjunto cartográfico apresentou os mapas de vegetação como elemento parte do meio técnico, que lança luz aos interesses espaciais da sociedade, sejam eles econômicos ou ecológicos, ao passo que os contornos do processo de antropização também são registrados.
