Resumo:The present article discusses how changes in the context of labor activity have influenced the development of the concept of competences as proposed by psychology of labor. This concept started from an individualistic view of competence, where the person is centrally responsible for the development of it, to a different view supported by historical-cultural perspective. Competence, under historical-cultural perspective, is developed and evaluated when mobilized in a real labor context, taking into account how individuals face and deal with cultural tools and the network of social actors to face real, context-linked situations. Thus, it highlights contributions of the historical-cultural perspective on competences to both performance and development of professional qualification, including transfer of competences at school and other contexts.
