Resumo: | The complexity of factors involved in the transmission of visceral leishmaniasis (VL)
constitutes difficulties for its control. The LV is reported in the five regions of Brazil and is
expanding in the state of Rio Grande do Norte where it is an endemic disease. This study
aimed to analyze the interrelationship between the incidence of visceral leishmaniasis and
development in Rio Grande do Norte; and, as specific objectives, to evaluate the abundance
and seasonality of phlebotomine sand fly species and their correlations with climate variables,
over three years, in peri-urban area of the municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante (Rio
Grande do Norte state); investigate people's knowledge of leishmaniasis; produce an
educational booklet on leishmaniasis as a paradidactic tool for teaching Science and Biology;
and carry out educational activities in environmental health and leishmaniasis. To achieve
these objectives, different methodologies were adopted at each research stage, and
incorporation of qualitative and quantitative aspects, contributing to an interdisciplinary
assessment of the results. The analysis allows us to infer that the current development model,
in the municipalities of Rio Grande do Norte, reflects negatively on the health condition of the
individuals, favoring the expansion of visceral leishmaniasis, indicating a strong relationship.
People’s knowledge about visceral leishmaniasis is inchoate to prevent them. However, the
study of phlebotomine sand fly fauna and breeding sites of the species, found in peri-urban
area, was useful for environmental management and vector control by the competent health
authorities. The didactic material on leishmaniasis and educational activities in environmental
health consisted of useful and complementary tools for the knowledge on leishmaniasis and it
may be used by health and education professionals to adopt preventive measures for diseases,
in conjunction with the students and population. Thus, this knowledge is essential, for the
public administration, to plan and consolidate intersectoral actions on socioeconomic, cultural
and environmental processes which determine negligence and influence the collective health
and illness by leishmaniasis in Rio Grande do Norte. |
