His most notable book, Aeneid, is a high point in Latin literature, in a period known as the Golden Age of the poets. However, beyond its funcion in literature, Aeneid also show us some important conceptions to the roman culture, politics and religion in the 1 st century B.C. This research aims to analyze the space inhabited by the romans dead in the Aeneid’s cantus VI, seeking to understand the function of this space to the narrative and the relation with the roman imaginary about the afterlife. Our goal is to analyze how Virgil builds that imaginary space with narrative elements and aligns Aeneia’s journey through the Orco with the roman mortuary culture in the 1 st century B.C. The roman funeral pratices are also a study object in order to support our analysis. The methodology used in this research is the speech analysis, specifically the method of narrative totalities, in which all narrative encircles the central theme and the structure narrative feed this central idea. After that, logical bases are created to support the plot and the outcome of the story. The author is inspired on the real and draws the elements which follow a logical narrative line to create his story. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) A obra de Virgílio tem sido analisada por incontáveis historiadores. Seu livro mais notável, a Eneida, é um marco fundamental na literatura latina na qual é conhecida como Era de Ouro dos poetas. Entretanto, para além da sua função na literatura, a Eneida também nos apresenta importantes concepções quanto à cultura, política e a religião romana do século I a.C. A presente dissertação busca analisar o espaço habitado pelos mortos no Canto VI da Eneida, entendendo a função deste para a narrativa e sua relação com o imaginário romano acerca da morte. Nosso objetivo é analisar como Virgílio constrói esse espaço imaginário a partir de elementos narrativos e alinha a viagem de Eneias pelo Orco com a cultura mortuária romana no século I a.C. As práticas funerárias romanas também são objeto de estudo para consolidação dessa análise. A metodologia utilizada para o presente trabalho se faz tendo como base a análise de discurso, mais especificamente o método de totalidades narrativas, para o qual toda narrativa gira em volta de um tema central e que os versos e parágrafos de um texto alimentam e reforçam essa concepção. A partir disso, cria-se as bases lógicas da narrativa que são construídas para atender ao enredo e desfecho da história.
