The origins of the disease are presented, from a historical and epidemiological point of view. And its main implications in societies over the centuries. Analyzing the different ways of treating the disease both physiologically and socially. Discussing the process of compulsory isolation, especially in Brazil. The discussion is based on the complex relationships that involve the compulsory hospitalization of lepers. And it was organized from three parts: live leprosy, leprosy and public health, and macroscopic scenery of leprosy. The entire thesis is permeated by an interview with an interlocutor who lived with leprosy throughout his life, and narrated his daily life from statements of very specific moments of his life. Throughout the thesis will be used the term leprosy in respect to the tradition and sometimes, the technical term leprosy. A tese toma a segregação e o estigma, marcas da lepra, como referências para discutir os principais aspectos religiosos, políticos e científicos ligados à doença, a partir dos textos sagrados e de algumas doutrinas científicas do século XIX, e suas principais consequências na consolidação da leitura que a sociedade construiu em torno da lepra. São apresentadas as origens da doença do ponto de vista histórico e epidemiológico, além das principais implicações nas sociedades ao longo dos séculos. Analisamos as diferentes formas de tratar da doença tanto do ponto de vista fisiológico quanto na perspectiva social, discutindo o processo do isolamento compulsório sobretudo no Brasil. A discussão se apoia nas relações complexas que envolvem a internação compulsória de leprosos. A tese foi organizada a partir de três partes: lepra ao vivo, lepra e saúde pública e cenário macroscópio da lepra. A tese toda é permeada por uma entrevista, com um interlocutor que viveu com a lepra durante toda a sua vida e narrou o seu cotidiano a partir de declarações de momentos bem específicos da sua vida.
